Jury awards $117M in med-mal case

A man who was told he had a sinus infection--but had actually had a stroke--was awarded $116.7 million in compensation this week by a Tampa jury, including $100 million in punitive damages. In August of 2000, patient Allan Navarro was seen at University Community Hospital in Carrollwood, FL complaining of nausea, a headache, dizziness, confusion, and double vision. A non-physician "expediter" tapped to do the initial screening sent the patient home after a few hours, saying the patient had sinusitis and a headache. But the man returned the next day far worse symptoms, and later lost use of his arms and legs.
