John Muir Health Names Dr. Irving Pike as First Chief Medical Officer

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Irving M. Pike, M.D. has been named John Muir Health’s first Chief Medical Officer (CMO), effective April 9, 2012.

“Dr. Pike brings a breadth of clinical and leadership experience, as well as proven collaboration skills to John Muir Health,” said Cal Knight, president and CEO of John Muir Health. “As we work together to navigate a challenging health care environment, I know he will be a passionate voice and advocate for our physicians, patients and John Muir Health.”

As CMO, Dr. Pike will serve as a key member of John Muir Health’s executive leadership team. He will provide medical and clinical leadership, expertise and perspective to the executive team, medical staff and clinical employees throughout the organization. Dr. Pike will also play a key role in the development and execution of business strategies that will support the organization’s growth and long-term goals. This includes advancing collaborative relationships among physicians and physician groups associated with John Muir Health to continue development of an integrated delivery system that provides outstanding quality and a superior patient experience.

Dr. Pike has practiced gastroenterology in Virginia Beach, Virginia since 1983 and is currently president of the Gastroenterology Quality Improvement Consortium, which is dedicated to improving the quality of gastroenterology care throughout the United States. He also serves on the American College of Gastroenterology’s Board of Trustees.

Previously, he spent 12 years as a physician executive with Sentara Healthcare in southeastern Virginia. Sentara is a non-profit, integrated health system that includes 10 acute care hospitals, including a trauma center, six outpatient care campuses, seven nursing centers, three assisted living centers, seven advanced imaging centers and a medical group with more than 400 primary care and specialty physicians. For a majority of his career at Sentara, he served as Vice President for Medical Affairs with responsibility for patient safety, care management and care delivery, including clinical quality improvement, as well as medical staff leadership development and education.

“I am impressed by John Muir Health’s commitment to quality and recognition as one of the area and nation’s best by U.S. News and World Report and other third party organizations,” said Dr. Pike. “I am excited to work with physicians, staff and administrators to maintain that focus on quality and ensure we are delivering the best possible patient care and experience.”

Dr. Pike was selected after extensive interviews with a search committee that included board members, physicians and administrators. He is uniquely qualified to serve as John Muir Health’s first CMO having been the first Medical Director of Physician Education and first Vice President for Medical Affairs for Sentara Health Care.

“During the interview process, I had an opportunity to see first-hand how dedicated the physicians and staff are to their patients and how committed they are to serving the community,” said Dr. Pike. “My wife and I were also overwhelmed by the feeling of pride that everyone we encountered in the community felt about being served by John Muir Health. I feel honored to be joining such an outstanding team and organization.”
