GE Healthcare, in a major deal which considerably strengthens its position in the health IT market, has agreed to acquire medical billing software provider IDX Systems for $1.2 billion. The deal creates a new health IT powerhouse with strengths in imaging, billing and electronic medical records. IDX has been in the physician billing market since 1970. In 2004, GE Healthcare reported operating income of $2.29 billion.
