Health Management Associates Chooses PatientKeeper for Enterprise-Wide Computerized Physician Order Entry as Key Component

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- PatientKeeper®, Inc., the leading provider of Physician Information Technology, today announced that Health Management Associates, Inc. (NYSE:HMA) has chosen PatientKeeper to be its company-wide, computerized physician order entry (CPOE) solution. Health Management Associates (Health Management) selected PatientKeeper CPOE™ software because of its focus on supporting the way physicians work and its ability to integrate into Health Management’s existing technology infrastructure. Both of these factors were critical considerations for Health Management’s complex network of community hospitals. As a current customer of PatientKeeper, Health Management has already experienced high levels of physician satisfaction with PatientKeeper’s Mobile Clinical Results application on iPhone and Blackberry devices. The health system was eager to extend this success to other hospitals in its network while extending the use of PatientKeeper to include the PatientKeeper CPOE product across its hospitals.

“When Health Management decided to choose a partner for our CPOE initiative we had two significant imperatives to consider: whether or not our physicians would actually use the technology selected and how well it fit into our existing hospital information system infrastructure. PatientKeeper was the clear choice on both counts,” said James L. Jordan, Senior Vice President, MIS at Health Management. “All other CPOE options would have required major changes to our existing technology infrastructure. What’s more, having already seen how quickly our doctors adopted PatientKeeper’s technology, we knew that we’d be able to count on similar levels of adoption.”

Through its subsidiaries, Health Management operates 55 hospitals with approximately 8,400 licensed beds in non-urban communities located throughout the United States. Health Management’s core mission is to enable America’s best local healthcare by providing the people, processes, capital and expertise necessary for its hospital and physician partners to fulfill their local missions of delivering superior healthcare services.

“As a physician, I have heard about the promise of technologies like CPOE for decades, but no matter how enticing they sound, the challenge has always been finding a solution that physicians will use,” said Ronald N. Riner, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Health Management. “PatientKeeper CPOE is exciting as it will enable orders to be entered from a computer, smartphone or even an iPad. PatientKeeper’s software is intuitive to physicians and requires minimal training. What’s more, by supporting the way a physician practices medicine, it effectively reduces the time it takes to enter orders, letting physicians do what they do best – care for patients.”

PatientKeeper CPOE enables physicians to translate all of the things they normally do throughout the day – ordering labs, tests and medications, etc. – into a seamless system that connects all of the appropriate departments within a hospital or health system. PatientKeeper does not require hospitals to install a new HIT system and is designed to improve physician workflow to save physicians time so it will be quickly and easily adopted. PatientKeeper CPOE features personalized order sets, order routing, mobile platform support for entering simple orders remotely and support for hybrid and electronic processes.

“With today’s focus on healthcare reform, every hospital is looking to achieve Meaningful Use, but more importantly, meaningful adoption. While CPOE is an absolute requirement to qualify for HITECH stimulus dollars, the existing solutions on the market today have not yet provided a proven path to widespread adoption,” said Paul Brient, CEO of PatientKeeper. “We are thrilled that Health Management, with its strong focus on providing tools that help its physicians, has elected to expand the scope of its PatientKeeper deployment.”
