Health information exchange calls for doc buy-in

Physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare providers are collaborating in a new data infrastructure, health information exchanges (HIE). The aim is to leverage information technology to foster provider teamwork and improve quality care. One the keys to HIEs is physician buy-in.

"Our program is built on the belief that a health information exchange should happen with our physicians, not to them," Stephen A. Ralph, president and CEO of Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif., wrote in a Hospital Impact blog post. Huntington Memorial Hospital is one of a handful of hospitals around the country--along with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, UMASS, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, and SHARP Healthcare--that is taking a leadership role in health information exchanges. --Read more of this Hospital Impact blog post
