GE Healthcare, InterMountain to develop error-prevention software

On Wednesday, GE Healthcare and InterMountain Health Systems said they will join forces to develop computer software which will help prevent medication errors. The system the two companies are planning will use bar coding technology and decision support features to warn caregivers about potentially fatal interactions and other possible dangers.

The deal is the first project to be announced since GE Healthcare and InterMountain signed a 10-year partnership earlier this year. InterMountain, which is based in Salt Lake City, is widely seen as a leader in healthcare IT. The healthcare system first started using computers in its hospitals to improve patient care in the 1970s.
