To realize their full potential, EHR products must be able to share information seamlessly. An interoperable health IT environment enables better workflows and reduced ambiguity, and allows data transfer among EHR systems and health care stakeholders.

In creating an interoperable health IT environment, standards are particularly critical. The Office of the National Coordinator has specified the use of RxNorm vocabulary as the medication and medication allergy vocabulary standard within certified systems which enable Meaningful Use Stage 2 clinical information exchanges.

Webinar speakers include Robert McClure, MD, president, MD Partners, Inc. and George Robinson, RPh, senior product manager, FDB. Robert C. McClure, MD, was trained in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and practiced for 10 years before devoting the past 20 years to clinical informatics. He is an active participant in health care standards development (ONC S&I framework, HL7, IHE, LOINC, NCPDP, and Canadian Health Infoway) and currently serves on the HIT-SC Clinical Quality Work Group, and IHTSDO the Implementation and Innovation committee.

In his role as senior product manager at FDB, George Robinson, RPh, provides guidance toward the development and ongoing support of interoperability, dosing and clinical decision support content. He has promoted electronic prescribing initiatives through active participation in professional organizations, e-prescribing pilots and federal policy-making subcommittees. Robinson is a past Co-Chair of the CCHIT Interoperability Work Group and current Vice-Chair of the ASHP Section’s Advisory Group on Ambulatory Health Informatics.
