EXTENSION, INC. and Polycom to Deliver New Healthcare Solutions

Combined Clinical Alerting Solutions Specifically Designed for the Healthcare Sector

FORT WAYNE, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- EXTENSION, INC. announced today its clinical alerting and notification solutions are now integrated with Polycom wireless handset technology. The solution combines the EXTENSION server-based messaging software platform for enterprise healthcare organizations with the Polycom® SpectraLink® 8400 series wireless handsets.

The solution will aggregate data from various IT and clinical systems and other medical devices and deliver time-sensitive alerts or notifications to the handsets commonly carried by nurses and other healthcare professionals. By allowing clinicians to receive contextual messages from any location, they can make more informed decisions regarding patient treatment and thus improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Polycom's SpectraLink enterprise-grade wireless phones operate on converged voice and data Wi-Fi infrastructure and are designed to withstand the rigors of tough hospital workplace environments while providing rugged reliability. The handsets provide all the feature functionality of a desk phone while significantly improving employee mobility, responsiveness and productivity. The SpectraLink 8400 series Voice over Wireless LAN handsets transform the delivery of mobile healthcare applications by bringing the power of thin client and browser technology to front-line healthcare professionals in an easy-to-use and easy-to-manage interface.

Todd Plesko, CEO of EXTENSION, commented, “Many healthcare organizations have long used Polycom solutions for clinical communications. EXTENSION is delighted to bring intelligent integration, alerting and messaging capabilities to a recognized market leader. With EXTENSION, Polycom handsets will now have the ability to communicate directly with smartphones thus enabling nurse-to-physician communication and collaboration, and vice versa. This secure, HIPAA-compliant, messaging capability combined with integration to clinical applications and devices will place Polycom and EXTENSION at the forefront of secure and convenient clinical communications.”

“UW Northwest Hospital & Medical Center chose the Polycom Spectralink 8400 Series wireless handsets, combined with EXTENSION HealthAlert to replace our existing hospital one-way paging system. Clearly focused on the demanding communications needs of healthcare institutions like ours, the combined best-of-breed solution will help us save money, improve patient care and increase nurse job satisfaction by allowing secure messaging between all our mobile devices and ultimately, integration with our EMR and nurse call systems. Detailed technical discussions with the combined team during the planning phase reinforced our initial impression of the industry leadership and competency of both Polycom and EXTENSION and provided us with the confidence to move forward quickly. We believe this is the best solution for Northwest Hospital,” said Keith Morris - Siemens/Northwest Hospital Program Manager - CPOE Project/Hospital Communication System.

The solution will include nurse call integration and alerting, abnormal lab result notifications, STAT order notifications, report availability notifications, and other common workflow scenarios. It is expected to be generally available to customers in January 2012.
