Debunking Myths, Alliance Surgical Distributors Unveils Utilization Study

Study Proves Surgeon Ownership in Implant Distribution Does Not Lead to Overutilization

REDLANDS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Alliance Surgical Distributors conducted a recent study of its flagship distributorship, Inland Spine and Orthopedics, and found surgical case volumes following inception of the distributorship were consistent with years prior to formation of the distributorship and vary only with volume of new patient visits. This comes at a critical time when industry special interest groups continue to argue that surgeon owned distribution will lead to overutilization.

“When done right, as with the Alliance model adopted by Inland Spine and Orthopedics, not only can you bring needed efficiencies but you can significantly reduce health care costs for your hospital without a shift in the way you practice medicine,” commented John C. Steinmann, DO, the company’s founder. "This is also what sets Alliance Surgical Distributors apart, we follow very strict guidelines and above all truly provide a savings to our hospitals."

As part of annual compliance required by Alliance Surgical Distributors, data for orthopedic surgeries were collected from all surgeons participating in Inland Spine and Orthopedics. The surgeons' patient visits and surgical case data were collected for the past five years, including surgical cases where the surgeon used implants from the distributorship. Two sub-specialty total joint surgeons were also compared; one is a member of Inland Spine and Orthopedics, the other is not and is used as a control.
