Critical Access Hospital Partners with McKesson to Speed Path to Meaningful Use

Paragon’s Ease-of-Use a Key Factor for Lakewood Health System

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Lakewood Health System, a 25-bed critical access hospital in Staples, Minn., recently selected McKesson’s top-rated Paragon®hospital information system (HIS) to replace its longstanding information technology system. Lakewood sought an HIS that would be easy and cost-effective to install and maintain while enabling the hospital to accelerate its efforts to achieve meaningful use.

With its integrated clinical and financial database, Paragon is a contemporary solution designed to meet the needs of hospitals of various sizes, including critical access hospitals. Built on a Microsoft® Windows-based platform, it provides an electronic health record that serves as the foundation of the solution suite. With its single database, Paragon requires minimal hardware and fewer IT resources to support the system.

“Our hospital had a desire to remain independent and manage our own HIS, so we appreciated the ease-of-use that Paragon provides,” said Jeff Osegard, chief information officer, Lakewood Health System. “Most importantly, Paragon will help us to drive meaningful improvements in patient care – from providing our doctors and nurses with real-time access to patient information, to enabling them to electronically submit patient orders and document the five rights of medicine using bar codes.”

For the past five years1, Paragon has been rated Best in KLAS for Community HIS in the Top 20 Best in KLAS Awards: Software & Professional Services report. Paragon users give the system high marks for its intuitive, feature-rich design and speed of implementation.

“In addition to selecting the right HIS for our needs, we were looking to forge a long-term partnership with an industry leader,” added Tim Rice, chief executive officer, Lakewood Health System. “We were drawn to McKesson because we believe the company will help us to get where we need to be quickly and efficiently, with minimal disruption to care.”

“We’re pleased to offer progressive organizations like Lakewood the capabilities they need to support their clinical and financial goals as well as the ease-of-use they need for rapid adoption,” said Jim Pesce, president, Paragon, McKesson Provider Technologies. “Supporting critical access hospitals in underserved communities is one important part of our mission with Paragon. Our partnership with Lakewood underscores our history of success in that market.”
