Contract Awarded for Construction of New Denver VA Hospital

$22.5 Million Contract for 184-Bed Facility

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded the first major contract to construct a new VA Medical Center in the Denver area.

“The new medical center for Denver demonstrates VA’s commitment to the Veterans it serves,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “It will provide Veterans with the state-of-the-art medical care that they deserve while investing in the local economy.”

The $22.5 million contract was awarded to Kiewit-Turner a Joint Venture of Englewood, Colo.

The new medical center will replace the Denver Medical Center for the Eastern Colorado Health Care System and will be constructed at the Fitzsimons campus in Aurora, Colo. The new 184-bed replacement medical center will include a 30-bed Spinal Cord Injury/Disease Center, a 30-bed community living center, a research building, a central utility plant and parking structures.

This first contract includes the renovation of the former UPI Office Building, which will be known as the Clinic Building South. This 120,000 square-foot space will include areas for mental health services and administrative functions, in addition to a Department of Defense outpatient clinic for the United States Air Force. This contract also includes the demolition of select buildings on the site. The total replacement medical center is scheduled to be completed in February 2014.

The construction of the new Medical Center in Aurora will enable VA to continue collaborating with the University of Colorado Hospital, which is now located on the Fitzsimons campus.

The Clinic Building South is located at the corner of Colfax and Wheeling Street on the Fitzsimons campus.
