Consolidation of Physician Group within Health Systems to Lead to Access Barriers for Pharmaceutical Representatives

Memphis, TN Market Overview Now Available from HealthLeaders-InterStudy

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care market intelligence, reports that Memphis, TN has seen rapid consolidation of physicians within the health system which can lead to physician access barriers for pharmaceutical representatives. At the end of 2010 the three largest health systems employed 84 physicians, as of this month that number had swelled to more than 400, according to the report.

“The health systems are using their newly employed physician groups as building blocks for coordinated care and payment initiatives, including bundled payments and Accountable Care Organizations,” said HealthLeaders-InterStudy Analyst April Wortham.

The trend of health system employment of physicians is expected to continue especially among specialties like cardiology and oncology. Alternative forms of alignment between physicians and health systems will also emerge, in particular, provider service agreements and clinical management agreements, according to the report.

However, the news isn’t all bad for pharmaceutical companies in this market: the two largest health systems are planning comprehensive cancer centers in the area, indicating potential for increased oncology drug sales, according to the report.

In addition to providing detailed analysis of levers and barriers in the market, the Memphis Market Overview answers the following questions:

  • Which MCOs compete head-to-head in the small group coverage market?
  • Are hospitals facing increased competition from physician-owned outpatient and surgery centers?
  • Which physician groups are participating in a patient-centered medical home pilot?
