CMS: Medicare providers OK with intermediaries

The majority of providers are satisfied, if not thrilled, with the middlemen that handle claims processing and customer services for Medicare, according to a recent study by CMS. Earlier this year, CMS's Medicare Contractor Provider Satisfaction Survey (MCPSS) sent out 25,000 surveys to randomly selected providers, including MDs, facilities and suppliers. The survey found that 85 percent of respondents rated their contractors between four and six out of six points. Rural health centers and skilled nursing facilities gave fiscal intermediaries the highest scores (both with 4.73 out of six points). Not surprisingly, the study found that providers who felt that the intermediary handled both provider questions and claims processing well were likely to give out the highest marks. CMS plans to conduct the MCPSS every year going forward.
