CHW President/CEO Lloyd Dean Receives Health Care Leadership Honor

Modern Healthcare Magazine Names Dean as one of Nation’s Top 25 Minority Executives

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), the nation’s eighth largest hospital system, today announced that President/CEO Lloyd H. Dean has been recognized as one of the nation’s top 25 minority health care executives by Modern Healthcare magazine.

“This recognition is very special for me,” says Mr. Dean. “It is particularly gratifying to be named in a year when landmark health care reform was finally realized. Just as the doors to leadership are opening wider for all, so too is the opportunity for millions of more people to finally realize the dream of access to health care.”

This marks the second time Mr. Dean has received the recognition, which was instituted by Modern Healthcare in 2006 and is given biennially. Criteria for the nomination process include: successfully serving as a leader or managing an organization or company; having shown the ability or power to effect change in the health care industry; demonstrating a willingness to share expertise with others in the field; serving as a role model or mentor to other minority health care executives and assuming a leadership position in the industry outside of the candidate's own organization or company.

In his role as President/CEO, Mr. Dean is responsible for $11 billion in assets and the overall management, strategy and direction of CHW’s integrated health care system of 40 hospitals, 45 health clinics, 9 trauma centers, two medical practice groups, 60,000 employees, and 10,000 physicians. CHW serves a population spanning 22 million people throughout California, Arizona, and Nevada.

Mr. Dean played a leadership role in advocating for health care reform, both in his capacity as President/CEO for Catholic Healthcare West and as the president of the Catholic Healthcare Association of the United States in 2008. He also worked directly with Congress and the Obama Administration in supporting passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

In 2004, Mr. Dean was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the California Commission for Jobs and Economic Growth. He also chairs the Bay Area Council’s Healthcare Committee and is a co-architect of the city’s Healthy San Francisco, which is nationally recognized for providing health care to San Francisco’s 82,000 uninsured residents.

Mr. Dean serves as a member of the boards of Wells Fargo & Company and Mercy Housing, Inc. He is also the recipient of the Partners in Care 2007 Mathies Award for Vision and Excellence in Healthcare Leadership, and has been named to Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare for four consecutive years.
