LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Michele D. “We are pleased to see Michele selected for this highly competitive leadership development program. She has demonstrated leadership at The Saban Research Institute, in the department of Pediatrics and at the medical school at USC. By participating in the ELAM program, not only will she be well prepared for her role in senior academic leadership at Children’s Hospital and at the Keck School of Medicine, she will also be well positioned to build on her commitment to mentoring trainees and faculty, and as a role model for talented, female junior faculty,” said Brent Polk, MD, director of The Saban Research Institute and vice president of Academic Affairs at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Dr. Kipke, who is also director of The Saban Research Institute’s Community, Health Outcomes & Intervention Research Program, is one of 54 fellows in the esteemed ELAM program.

While the number of women graduating from medical schools is on the rise, the number of women in leadership roles at academic health centers lags behind. ELAM is changing this situation as the only national program dedicated to preparing promising women faculty for positions of senior academic leadership.

Each Fellow must be nominated by the dean or another senior official of her institution. Dr. Kipke was the sole nominee from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC), where she is a professor in the departments of Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine, as well as a co-director of the Southern California Clinical and Translational Science institute (CTSI).

“It is indeed an honor to be able to participate in this prestigious program, and I look forward to embarking on this journey with a distinguished group of women from across the country,” said Dr. Kipke. “The ELAM program will give me the opportunity to hone my leadership and administrative skills, and to apply these skills to the benefit of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the Keck School of Medicine.”

As vice chair in the department of Pediatrics, Dr. Kipke works in recruitment of research faculty, training and mentorship of junior faculty, strategic planning as well as the integration of research initiatives within the department of Pediatrics, The Saban Research Institute, and the CTSI.

Her own investigations touch on such wide-ranging topics as pediatric autism, medical errors, maternal predictors of birth outcomes, HIV risk among young men, risk/protective factors involved in childhood obesity and diabetes; and the causes and consequences of homelessness.

The year-long ELAM program includes three in-residence sessions, along with individual research projects.

ELAM is a core program of Drexel University’s International Center for Executive Leadership in Academics. The Institute’s tradition of advancing women in medicine began in 1850 with the founding of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, the nation’s first women’s medical school.
