BOKA Powell-Designed Methodist Hospital for Surgery Completed, Only Dedicated Orthopedics/Spine Hospital in Dallas-Ft Wort

Construction time dramatically reduced due to innovative BIM process

ADDISON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BOKA Powell LLC, http://www.bokapowell.com, released new images today of the completed Methodist Hospital for Surgery in Addison, Texas, a dedicated surgical hospital which opened last month. The 108,500 square-foot Phase I facility focuses on treating patients in need of highly specialized spine and joint surgery, as well as surgical care for ear, nose and throat.

The hospital has seven fully-equipped operating rooms, 32 private patient rooms (including four intensive care rooms), an outpatient physical therapy suite and a diagnostic imaging suite offering CT and MRI scanning.

BOKA Powell provided the planning, architectural design and interior design services for this project, which broke ground in November 2009, and was completed on an accelerated construction schedule of just ten and a half months.

Due to the sweeping federal health care reform bill passed in March 2010, in order to participate in the Medicare program, this physician-owned hospital was required to be opened and certified by December 31, 2010. To meet the new deadline, the project team essentially doubled the pace of construction - adding two shifts working 10 hours each, six days a week. Architects from BOKA Powell were on-site daily working with the construction team.

The project team used Building Information Modeling (BIM), which relies upon virtual building modeling software to increase design accuracy, reduce construction schedules, and radically improve coordination of engineering disciplines. The technology allows architectural drawings to sync with construction drawings in real-time to produce the necessary information for general contractors.

“This project schedule would not have been possible without BIM,” says Michael Crowe of BOKA Powell. “It’s virtually unheard of for a facility this size to be completed in this fast timeframe. Based on the success of this project, every health care project we design moving forward will use BIM.”

The project team includes Medica Development as the project’s developer, Rogers-O’Brien Construction as general contractor, Zinser/Grossman Structural as structural engineer, TLC as MEP engineer, TBG Partners as landscape designer and Kimley-Horn as civil engineer.

“The formation of this partnership among this special group of physicians, developer SRP/Medica, architect BOKA Powell, contractor Rogers-O’Brien, and the Town of Addison at a time when there has been much change and uncertainty due to health reform demonstrates the quality and commitment of the partnership,” said Michael Arvin, Methodist Health System senior vice president and chief development officer.

Methodist Hospital for Surgery announced earlier this month that it has received its Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) accreditation and Medicare provider number, successfully meeting the deadline imposed by the federal health care reform bill.

Methodist Hospital for Surgery is a joint venture partnership between area physicians, Methodist Health System, and Nueterra Healthcare.
