BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and P4 Healthcare Launch Oncology Pathways Program

Evidence-based oncology treatment initiative is designed to deliver consistent, high-quality healthcare

BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- P4 Healthcare and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee announced today the launch of the P4 Pathways Program, an oncology treatment initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of care for patients. The P4 Pathways Program will provide the tools to establish and implement clinically proven and evidence-based pathways for the treatment of patients with cancer, as well as protocols for supportive care. The pathways are a collaborative effort that will be developed with oncologists across the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee network as a way to provide cost-effective, quality healthcare without comprising the integrity or delivery of treatment.

“As the second leading cause of death in our state, cancer is a major health issue at both the individual and societal level. It’s a devastating disease that takes a huge physical, emotional and financial toll on individuals and their families,” said Robert Mandel, MD, Senior Vice President for Health Care Services for BlueCross. “By implementing this evidence-based program, we believe we’ll be able to better collaborate with our providers to improve the quality and cost of care delivered to our members and give them the peace of mind that they’re receiving the most appropriate treatment.”

“Tennessee is known for having a large number of outstanding oncology practices dedicated to quality cancer care and clinical research. With BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee’s adoption of the P4 Pathways Program, these practices will be able to come together to drive another level of clinical excellence and innovation in oncology care,” said Jeffrey Scott, MD, Chief Executive Officer, P4 Pathways.

Developed by P4 Healthcare, the P4 Pathways Program is designed to encourage high-quality, evidence-based standards of care to ensure best patient outcomes. The pathways for the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee network will be created in consultation with BlueCross and with the guidance of academic and community oncologists in Tennessee. The pathways will be updated on a regular basis to incorporate new and effective clinical approaches.

P4 Healthcare, creators of the P4 Pathways Program, will provide proprietary technology, tools, expertise, educational programs and hands-on training for developing, implementing, monitoring and reporting on the P4 Pathways Program. Practices implementing P4 Pathways programs have historically shown less variability in regimens, optimal use of chemotherapy and biologics, better management of toxicities and better-defined treatment milestones.

“This initiative with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is our fourth BlueCross BlueShield partnership,” said Dr. Scott. “As a result of our success bringing quality healthcare and value to each stakeholder in patient care, the P4 Pathways Program now currently helps manage the treatment of 12 million lives across six states and the District of Columbia.”
