Archimedes, Inc. Partners with Minnesota Health System to Deploy Individualized Guidelines and Outcomes (IndiGO) Platform

– IndiGO Program Underway at Fairview Health Services –

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Archimedes Inc., a healthcare modeling company, today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Minnesota’s Fairview Health Services for the use of Archimedes’ Individualized Guidelines and Outcomes (IndiGO) platform, a physician and patient decision support tool. Initially, Fairview Health Services will use IndiGO among patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. No additional information regarding the agreement was disclosed.

“At a time when health systems and medical groups are facing payment reforms and may be preparing to become Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), it is critical that they have tools to optimize outcomes while reducing costs under a defined budget,” said David M. Eddy, M.D., Ph.D., Archimedes’ founder. “IndiGO assists the physician in identifying high risk patients and prioritizing the benefit from various interventions to reduce preventable adverse events, while engaging the patient to take ownership of their care through a shared decision making process. The end result is improved outcomes and lower health care costs.”

Guidelines for care are crucially important aides to decision making in health care. Currently, physicians use what are described as population-based guidelines, such as the defined normal range for blood glucose levels and blood pressure, which typically focus on one risk factor or condition and use finite parameters to determine whether or not a patient should receive treatment. These guidelines also help assess a patient’s risk for developing diabetes and having a heart attack or stroke. Because population-based guidelines use finite parameters, there are limitations when it comes to the continuous and changing nature associated with these risks. Individualized guidelines, which can be created via Archimedes’ IndiGO platform, can address these limitations by taking into account up to 30 different person-specific risk factors, making it possible to both increase quality and reduce costs.

IndiGO analyzes person-specific health information from a patient’s electronic health record, then applies advanced algorithms which incorporates clinical evidence related to diseases, behaviors, and interventions. The results generated by IndiGO provide a graphical representation of an individual’s risk of having a heart attack or stroke, developing diabetes, and the predicted impact of interventions, such as lifestyle changes and medications that are most effective at reducing these risks. IndiGO and individualized guidelines can be used at the point-of-patient care, involving the patient in the decision making process and improving collaboration between patient and provider.

About IndiGO

Archimedes IndiGO is a unique decision support tool designed for use by physicians and other healthcare providers (nurses, care managers, health coaches) and patients. IndiGO calculates and displays the risk a patient has of adverse events - such as heart attacks, strokes, and onset of diabetes. IndiGO then suggests and prioritizes the medications and/or lifestyle interventions that have the greatest impact on reducing that risk. IndiGO is designed for use within ACOs, medical groups, integrated delivery networks (IDN), independent practice associations (IPA), and patient-centered medical homes (PCMH).

About Archimedes

Archimedes Inc. is a healthcare modeling organization. Its core technology - the Archimedes Model - is a clinically realistic, mathematical model of human physiology, diseases, interventions and healthcare systems. The Model is continually validated by comparing the results of simulated trials to the results of real multi-national clinical trials and cohort studies.

Through innovations such as IndiGO and ARCHeS, Archimedes helps people understand the implications of their decisions and for the last 15 years has been relied upon to answer complex, real world questions for health plans, health systems, medical groups, pharmaceutical companies, researchers, and other organizations in the United States and Europe. Archimedes, a Kaiser Permanente Innovation, is based in San Francisco, California. For more information on the company, visit our website at
