The realities of today’s healthcare environment — rising costs, declining reimbursement, a growing shortage of medical professionals and the health care needs of an aging population — all contribute to an increased demand for services in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU). Mary Jo Gorman, M.D., MBA, CEO and founder of Advanced ICU Care, will present the advances in telemedicine that are improving performance and the standard of care in the ICU at the Southern Hospital Medicine Conference in Atlanta on October 26.

“Having a high-performing ICU is critically important as hospitals prepare for value-added pricing, accountable care initiatives and the increasing demand for ICU services,” explains Dr. Gorman. “With the current severe shortage of intensivist physicians, hospitals are finding it is almost impossible to provide the 24/7 monitoring by these specialists that is the recommended standard of care. A telemedicine program with monitoring by board certified intensivists, in conjunction with the local medical staff, makes it possible for hospitals to improve their clinical, operational and financial performance.”

Results from a one-year analysis of hospitals with an Advanced ICU Care tele-ICU program showed, on average, a 40% improvement in mortality along with a 25% decrease in length of stay and a 17% increase in the number of cases managed in the ICU. Other research, as documented in the reported a decrease in mortality due to preventable complications with tele-ICUs. Research by the , an independent health policy research institute, found that return-on-investment for hospital tele-ICU programs occurs within about a year.

The 13 Annual Southern Hospital Medicine Conference will take place in Atlanta, Ga. from October 24-27 at the JW Marriott Hotel. Dr. Gorman’s talk, Advances in Remote Patient Monitoring and Tele-ICU Care,” will take place on Friday, October 26, at 11:00 a.m.
