3 essential steps to ensure a successful hospital opening

There's more to opening a new hospital than laying the cornerstone and completing construction, the CEO of the new Victory Medical Center Fort Worth in Texas writes in an article published by Becker's Hospital Review.

CEO Cheryl Spencer says she encourages her leadership team to focus on several key steps to ensure the organization achieves its goal of providing an exceptional surgical hospital in the community. Three of those steps are to:

  • Think like a patient, designing your hospital around what a patient would want to see.
  • Find and invest in top talent, then empower top hires to take ownership of their departments.
  • Know your surrounding community, network with businesses and nonprofits, and get involved.

Meanwhile, a recent article in Hospitals & Health Networks suggested the most effective hospital executives in a post-Affordable Care Act world will understand and promote interdepartmental collaboration, a broad range of hospital experience and understanding of hospital processes, and have a data-centric approach to leadership.

To improve patient experience, hospitals should empower their people to take ownership of the hospital, set expectations with staff (and have them set patient expectations), and set comprehensive patient experience accountability measures, FierceHealthcare previously reported.
