Advocate Aurora Health's investment arm acquires MobileHelp, a medical alert system maker

Advocate Aurora Enterprises has acquired MobileHelp, a maker of remote medical alert systems.

This is the fourth transaction of Advocate Aurora Health’s new investment arm; its goal is to invest in consumer health and wellness companies that take innovation beyond traditional care, the company said in a press release. From the get-go, the company has said its target sectors for investment are aging, parenthood and personal performance improvement.

MobileHelp aims for a holistic approach to care by enabling more consumer touchpoints outside a health system. Though the company’s solutions are primarily aimed at seniors, it has also expanded in recent years to athletes and patients with chronic health conditions.

“The future of health care includes using innovative technology to help consumers take better control of their health,” Advocate Aurora Health CEO Jim Skogsbergh said in the announcement. “The addition of MobileHelp underscores our dedication to investing in solutions that are complementary to our clinical offerings, advancing whole-person health and our purpose of helping people live well.”

MobileHelp’s technology relies on wireless voice, data and GPS tracking to identify the location of a patient in crisis and expedite emergency assistance. This medical alert system serves more than 300,000 households, according to the company. Another remote patient monitoring solution offered through MobileHelp’s sister company Clear Arch Health allows healthcare workers to create a custom monitoring system that is integrated with electronic health records, with the goal of improving care coordination.

“MobileHelp shares our commitment to enabling more people to age independently, comfortably and affordably,” Advocate Aurora Enterprises President Scott Powder said in the announcement. “With a range of innovative personal safety and medical monitoring systems, this investment lends itself to synergistic opportunities that will strengthen the care continuum and improve health outcomes.”
