Healthcare industry jobs—with their high pay and low unemployment rates—are among the best in the country, according to a new report that ranks careers.
U.S. News & World Report released its annual list of the best jobs in the country this week, and almost half (47 of 100) are in the healthcare industry. So are most that landed on the 2018 best-paying jobs list.

Fifteen of the 25 best-paying jobs are in healthcare, according to the publication. And the top five are all healthcare jobs:
- Anesthesiologist (average salary $269,600)
- Surgeon ($252,910)
- Obstetrician and gynecologist ($234,310)
- Oral and maxillofacial surgeon ($232,870)
- Orthodontist ($228,780)
The 100 best jobs list is calculated based on attributes that include high demand, high pay, good work-life balance and opportunities to advance, according to an announcement. Overall, the five best jobs are:
- Software developer
- Dentist
- Physician assistant
- Nurse practitioner
- Orthodontist

"Healthcare jobs are prominent in our list year after year and are predicted to continue growing rapidly within the job market by 2026," Rebecca Koenig, a careers reporter at U.S. News, said in the announcement.
"Healthcare goes beyond doctors and nursing professionals—there is high demand for people to fill positions in healthcare technology, at hospitals and elsewhere within the industry, that tap into a variety of categories we rank and that offer low unemployment rate, a high median salary and robust job growth," Koenig added.

U.S. News also ranked the best jobs within the healthcare industry, and in addition to the four jobs that cracked the main list's top five, the publication said that pediatricians have one of the best jobs in the industry.
Pediatricians have a low unemployment rate and fairly high salaries, an average of $168,990. And the growing demand for physicians to treat geriatric patients as baby boomers age, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics predicts job growth in pediatrics as well, projecting that 5,300 new jobs will form by 2026, U.S. News found.
