Government shutdown results in a variety of reactions from providers

Healthcare providers have had a variety of reactions to last week's shutdown of the federal government. The Association of American Medical Colleges stated that providers will "almost immediately" feel the effects of a shutdown, particularly in terms of cuts of payments to teaching hospitals. The American Academy of Pediatrics warned that the shutdown would impact pediatric care, particularly in terms of the influenza monitoring provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Although the shutdown is part of a campaign by some members of Congress to defund the Affordable Care Act, hospital operators such as Baylor Health System and Tenet Healthcare say they are embracing the changes the healthcare reform law will bring to the way they do business.
