Highlights:
- Net earnings of $294 million, or $1.06 per share, compared with $435 million, or $1.58 per share, for Q2 2009.
- Net income included a loss of $0.37 per share from results of the GMIB business, primarily related to interest rate movements.
- Premiums and fees increased approximately 15 percent relative to Q2 2009, primarily due to net membership growth and a change in membership mix, which includes a higher percentage of commercial and Medicare related risk businesses.
- Health care medical claims payable increased to approximately $1.0 billion at June 30, 2010 from $715 million at December 31, 2009, due to membership growth in commercial and Medicare related risk businesses.
