Catholic Health Initiatives plans to go national in home health

Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), the nation's third-largest Catholic healthcare system, has struck a deal to purchase regional home health business Consolidated Health Services, with the goal of turning home health services into a national business line, reports the Hamilton Journal-News.

"Consolidated Health Services is a great complement to our existing home care services," said CHI President/CEO Kevin Lofton in a statement. "Together, we are well positioned for the future as more and more health services in the U.S. are being delivered outside hospitals."

Consolidated Health Services has four core units: the home health business American Nursing Care; Patient Transport Services, which handles patient transportation; the home infusion therapy business, AmeriMed; and the joint-venture durable medical equipment provider, Cornerstone Medical.

Consolidated Health Services has 30 sites in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. The system has 73 hospitals; 40 long-term care, assisted- and residential-living facilities; and two community health-services organizations. Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives has facilities in 18 states, including Ohio and Kentucky. CHI already provides home care services in 30 of its markets.

CHI expects to operate Consolidated Health Services as a separate business unit. CHI is purchasing Consolidated Health Services from Cincinnati-based Bethesda Inc., its long-time joint sponsor in TriHealth, which operates Good Samaritan Hospital and Bethesda North Hospital. CHI expects to close the acquisition by Sept. 30. Terms were not released.
