Portal-based pulmonary EHR a boon for Colorado practice

Being able to access patient records from a web-based portal convinced Lone Tree, Colo.-based physician practice Colorado Pulmonary Disease to choose Waiting Room Solutions' EHR product, according to company officials.

Having patient records online at a physician's home office isn't enough, pulmonology experts explain. Pulmonologists provide care in multiple, disconnected locations during each day, moving from one office to another, or shuttling between the office and the hospital OR or ICU. They require access to patient data at any and all of those locations to ensure they have the latest respiratory test results, for example. They also need easy communications or messaging links to clinicians and administrative staff to check on patient progress, scheduling issues and coverage questions, making data transportability key. WRS officials indicate they offer online access to e-prescribing functions, meds management, lab interfaces and order tracking.

The specialty EHR also provides pulmonary-specific functionality--including bronchoscopy image management and sleep study imports--and interfaces with spirometer and pulmonary function test devices.

In addition, CPD purchased speech recognition to improve transcription and reduce outsourcing. It also is using billing and claims functions, according to a WRS press release. The system automatically funnels patient encounter data into the billing module, creates charges and cross-checks them with payer rules, WRS officials say. What's more, the system automatically checks (and re-checks) patient eligibility against the daily schedule, to ensure patients are covered before their visits.
