MIPS proposed rule under review at OMB

The proposed rule implementing the Merit Based Incentive Program System (MIPS) and alternative payment models as required by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) has been sent to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review. MIPS, which was created by MACRA in 2015, consolidates several reporting and incentive programs into one, including the Medicare Meaningful Use program.

MACRA requires the rules implementing MIPS to be published by Nov. 1, 2016. OMB typically has 90 days to review a rule, although that deadline can be extended. There is no minimum period for review. The notice specifically states that there is a risk that if the rule is not published in a timely manner that physicians would not have adequate time to prepare for MIPS. Website
