The Healthcare Financial Management Association recently released an analysis of accounting and reporting issues of hospital's federal electronic health record incentive payments. According to the authors, the purpose of the analysis is to bring "clarity" to accounting and reporting processes. The analysis notes that most hospitals that are registrants of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission use a contingency model--which requires appropriate identification of necessary contingencies before revenue can be recognized--to account for their payments.
