Veradigm has launched an ambient AI scribe powered by AvodahMed to allow practitioners to save time generating patient encounter notes and reduce provider burnout.
Veradigm, formerly Allscripts, aims to offer independent, small and midsized practices the ability to remain “fiercely independent” and opt into a smaller, hands-on electronic health record and practice management vendor.
Ian Maurer, vice president of technology at Veradigm, said the company began evaluating AI scribe vendors in early 2024. It chose advanced AI company AvodahMed, he said, because of its accuracy, usability and integration.
“Any clinician can go out and just download an ambient scribe, and certainly, most likely save a little bit of time and improve productivity a bit,” Maurer said. “We really wanted to bring in a partner that could deeply integrate into our platform ecosystem, so we could maximize that benefit. So instead of saving a few minutes per encounter, we really wanted to push the envelope.”
Veradigm conducted a series of pilots in September and October before making the AI scribe commercially available Nov. 1. Maurer said during the pilot phase, the solution saved an average of seven to 10 minutes per encounter.
Maurer touted the deep integration of AvodahMed, which he said allows clinicians to save more time as compared to lightly integrated or non-integrated scribing solutions. AvodahMed and Veradigm worked closely to integrate the product so physicians don’t have to leave the EHR system to start the scribe encounter, Maurer said.
After the encounter, the software quickly generates the notes the provider needs, whether a clinical or billing note, and populates the EHR with discrete patient data such as vital signs.
“It's a much less disjointed experience than, say, a clinician that has to pull up a separate ambient scribe, go through that scribing process and then copy and paste the output or the notes into the clinical record system, which is, quite frankly, what a lot of clinicians are doing today," Maurer said. “They are, in fact, seeing a productivity boost … but not … the maximized productivity boost that we're seeing when the ambient scribe is truly embedded.”
Veradigm has also added a return on investment calculator for customers to determine whether they want to add the AI scribe onto their existing Veradigm products.
Veradigm’s set of clinical EHR platforms are used by mostly independent, small and midsized healthcare organizations. Maurer said Veradigm offers an alternative to the big EHR players and can be better for small independent practices because it offers flexibility and customization.
“Most of our customers want to remain independent and don't want to be tied into a closed ecosystem,” Maurer said.
Veradigm offers other advanced quality and analytics solutions for providers, health plans and payers. In addition to the EHR, Veradigm offers a practice management solution and payer clearinghouse.
