Geisinger merging with Bloomsburg Health

Following approval to merge with Shamokin Area Community Hospital two months ago, Geisinger Health System and Bloomsburg Health System today signed a definitive agreement to merge, reports Daily Item. The deal between the Pennsylvanian organizations currently is pending regulatory approval, expected to take approximately six months.

Under the agreement, Bloomsburg Hospital, Bloomsburg Health Care Center, Columbia Montour Home Health & Hospice, and Bloomsburg Physicians Services will join Geisinger, according to a press release.

The merger builds on current collaborations between the two health systems. For example, eight Geisinger physicians already have full privileges at Bloomsburg Hospital, and 19 others serve as consulting or courtesy staff members. Bloomsburg Health said that the roughly 800 employees will keep their jobs, according to the press release.

The Geisinger-Bloomsburg merger follows Geisinger's announcement in November of its intentions to merge with Shamokin Area Community Hospital, a deal approved in July. Geisinger will take over Shamokin in January, reports Daily Item.
