Women's heart attack rates go up, men's go down
An "ominous trend" has emerged among women and their risk of a heart attack, according to new research published in the Oct. 26 issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine.
Middle-aged men are still at a much greater risk for suffering a heart attack, but the gap is narrowing. In fact, the prevalence of myocardial infarction has increased among middle-aged women over the last two decades, while it has decreased among similarly aged men.
The researchers are calling for greater emphasis on risk factor controls for women to help mitigate "this worrisome trend."
