Here's an interesting wrinkle in the chain drugstores' race to sell outpatient services (such as retail clinics and on-site clinics for employers). Walgreen Co. has announced plans to begin marketing a package of such services--including pharmacies, in-store clinics and corporate health centers--directly to employers.

Employers who sign up for the program will be able to offer employees a range of services including checkups, preventive care, dentistry and optometry, along with discounts on prescriptions and other Walgreen's private-label products.

The new package builds on services Walgreen has been building out or acquiring over the past few years. Its holdings now include Take Care Health Systems, a retail clinic operator, along with I-trax Inc. and Whole Health Management, both big operators of work-site clinics. It now operates 321 retail clinics and more than 350 on-site clinics for employers.
