VA whistleblowers honored

The Office of Special Counsel (OSC), the federal agency responsible for whistleblower protection, honored three Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) physicians, according to the Washington Post. The honorees disclosed major issues within VA facilities, such as using secret wait lists to cover up excessive wait times. Katherine Mitchell of the Phoenix VA, Phyllis Hollenbeck and Charles Sherwood, both of the Jackson, Mississippi, system were honored with the OSC's Public Servant of the Year Award. The three whistleblowers "turned the public spotlight on serious threats to patient health and safety at the Phoenix and Jackson, Mississippi VA Medical Centers," said Special Counsel Carolyn Lerner. "Because of their efforts, veterans are now far more likely to receive the treatment they deserve." Article
