Supreme Court rejects attempt to overturn San Francisco healthcare laws
San Francisco's universal health care requirement is still safe. Yesterday, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy rejected the 800-member San Francisco Golden Gate Restaurant Association's attempt to reverse lower courts' decisions to enforce the ordinance.
Under San Francisco law, a business must provide private healthcare for its employees, set up health reimbursement accounts, or pay a fee to defray the city's costs of providing care. The program requires employers with 20 to 99 workers to pay $1.23 per hour worked; companies with more than 100 employees must pay $1.85 an hour. The court is expected to decide whether or not to review the case later this year. The restaurant association appealed the case individually to Justice Kennedy who handles emergency Supreme Court appeals from California.
