TX hospitals fight for $400M in Medicaid money

Texas hospitals are facing the loss of millions in indigent care funding, with the federal government now challenging the state's basis for distributing the funds through its Medicaid program. The program, which got started in April, has already sent more than $400 million to 75 of the state's hospitals to reimburse them for indigent care.

However, Medicaid closed down the program last week, unhappy with the way the funding was structured. Under the current arrangement, private hospitals asked public hospitals to put local property taxes they collect up as matching funds to whatever supplemental funding they got. Not only are the feds refusing to authorize more payments, they may ask the state to repay the funds--or even the hospitals themselves.
