TX donor provides $1.8M to care for jobless
Responding to difficult economic times, a Dallas donor has given $1.8 million to help people who've been hit by the recession to get adequate healthcare. The donor told officials the money was specifically intended to help people who have lost their jobs or health coverage.
The anonymous donor gave the money to the Parkland Health & Hospital System's Community Oriented Primary Care program, which is designed to treat people's medical conditions before they get worse or require an inpatient stay. The gift is the largest donation the program has ever received.
The program operates 11 primary care centers and 11 school-based health centers, in addition to several homeless medical outreach mobile units. The gift will allow Parkland to hire five new clinical teams. This should significantly increase the clinics' ability to offer same-day service, allowing them to serve as many as 130 more patients per day.
