Two programs targeting central-line infections to be launched

Two programs aimed at reducing central-line infections in intensive-care units are being launched at 28 state hospital associations, foundations and patient-safety groups. One program is receiving funds through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality while the other is funded by the Sandler Foundation of the Jewish Community Endowment Fund; both are affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, and look to spread practices that originated in Michigan hospitals nationwide. 

The program, funded by the AHRQ, began at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Ten states are participating in this program, including California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington, among others. 

The program funded by the Sandler Foundation started with the Johns Hopkins research group and the MHA Keystone Center for Patient Safety and Quality. Currently, 18 states are participating in this program, including Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee and Wisconsin, among others. 

The programs share the joint title "On the Cusp: Stop Bloodstream Infections in the ICU."
