Survey: Economy has caused infection prevention reduction

A new survey conducted by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology concluded that many hospitals have had to cut back on various infection prevention measures due to recent budget cuts, Healthcare Finance News reports. Almost half of the close to 2,000 facilities surveyed were forced to spend less on equipment, staff and education, while 40 percent of the hospitals were forced to lay off employees or cut back their hours.

APIC President Christine Nutty is worried that, as the nation's infection problems continue to grow, this could become a serious problem.

"We are concerned by these findings," she told Healthcare Finance News. "Every healthcare facility must have the resources to identify infections, conduct a systematic investigation to determine the cause and implement and evaluate prevention measures."

The survey also determined that two-thirds of the hospitals that responded had one or no full-time staffers to only work on infection prevention. Only 20 percent had data mining programs to help fix infection problems in real time; 90 percent, meanwhile, had either no staff person at all or no full-time staff member available for analytic support, which worries APIC CEO Kathy Ware.

"Infection prevention departments at our nation's healthcare facilities are severely understaffed and under-resourced," Ware told Healthcare Finance News. "Without enough trained professionals, funding and high-tech solutions that speed access to infection-related data, we are not going to continue to make progress in eliminating preventable infections."

How did we get so stupid! What a load of BS. Hasn't anyone heard of "An ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure"? There is absolutely no excuse for cutting back or getting lax on infection control. DUMB DUMB DUMB and simply undefensible. Makes you wonder just how uneducated and lazy this country has become.

As a nurse you are alawys aware of the risk for expsore the diseases but I always though the company would have to compensate you. I had been a nure 20 years but in 2007 myself along with another employee seeing the same patients had positive PDD, I had a previous heart attack in 2004 and two stents implanted.I had been fine untill the Health Department ordered Isoniazid for a 6 month TX.after only 7 days I became very ill, nausea, vomiting,Blurred vision and then rapid pulse and chesk pain,I was denied workers comp, they now state they had no pstients with Tuberculosis,They never test clients just employee,I had Hiv patients, lung cancer (worked hospice) The other employye and I were friends opr socialized together, she was the bath aid and the only time i talked to her was I was coming and she was going,I feel Alacare should compensate for my neuropathy and my now poor quality of life.I don't have access to theior chart,Most ever lawyer I talk to say they can only get 15% of compensation and it would not be worth it to them, alacare has alot of coperate lawyers.I would like to go before a judge and jury and I know there would see I am not being treated fair,.

Congratulations to the APIC for the excellent survey conducted recently regarding cutbacks. It is more than obvious that the priorities of HCF Administration are somewhat mixed up. But I certainly hope that it is sorted out as soon as possible. I advocate for more legal input into this, someone needs to hold the powers that be, accountable for the long term consequences of their actions.
