Study: MRI imaging may do more harm than good for early breast cancer patients
Comments
I am a researcher in the field of breast MRI and have been working along with a network of thousands to improve the technology to provide increased detection, diagnosis accuracy and eventually to better guide therapies such as surgical resection. I have worked in this field for 12 years and what we have seen has been nothing short of amazing. This article negatively impacts the incredible progress that has been made to counter breast cancer in this field.
The doctors and researchers that have dedicated their lives to this clinical tool have cautiously promoted the technique based on solid evidence and strong clinical trials. The imaging technology has advanced and in a very short period of time. Leading the public to believe the strategy that early cancer detection is not beneficial is a dangerous misrepresentation.
What was presented to the general public was unfortunately slanted with a sensationalistic bent. There is a large community of people all strive to an end of breast cancer, patients who demand the best chance at living without fear of the disease, and today breast MRI has given everyone tremendous hope based on evidence. This modality offers real hope to woman and their families that breast cancer can be controlled.
