In the past, medical officials have advised patients that one major weapon against the onset of the flu season was flu medicine Tamiflu. However, it now looks like Tamiflu is going to be something of a bust this season, as the most common flu bug is strongly resistant to Tamiflu, according to the CDC. Officials reassure consumers that the flu vaccine is still available and is seems to be well-matched to fight this year's strain of flu bugs. However, doctors are advised to be aware of the Tamiflu problem nonetheless. Article

Lithium was used for many medical indications before it was found to have antimanic properties. It can be effective in antibiotic resistant infections.

As a retired industrial health care scientist, allow me to recommend a simple low cost and safe solution to the flu problem which I believe is more effective than flu shots: non-Rx zinc-gluconate-g;ycine based oral lozenges that are medically proven effective antivirals (confirm on Pubmed). If taken in time, one can prevent flu symptoms or shorten their duration to 2-3 days or about half of the normal span. They are available at about $7/18 lozenges for brand name or about $4 for generic versions at most drug outlets.
