A scandal involving a falsified medical journal article came into clearer focus this week when Medtronic disclosed that it had paid the author almost $800,000 over the past eight years. The author, a former military surgeon, had claimed that a Medtronic bone growth product had been very beneficial in treating leg injuries experienced by American soldiers. The article was later retracted when it was discovered that the surgeon, Dr. Timothy Kuklo, had forged the names of co-authors and cited data that didn't match military records.
