While some say healthcare costs are responsible for the majority of American bankruptcies, apparently such bankruptcies are almost unheard of in Japan, according to one researcher who has studied its system. Japan's system offers several facets worth studying, including, most notably, that it has the lowest per capital healthcare costs among the world's advanced nations, and its population is the healthiest, says John Creighton Campbell of the University of Michigan.
