SPOTLIGHT: The fuss over physician ratings

Here's a view many FierceHealthcare readers will find a bit challenging. Over at Managed Care Matters, blogger Joe Paduda has taken the position that physician outrage over health plan ratings is a bunch of sound and fury signifying that they're crybabies. In his view, insurance companies are moving in the right direction by using claims data to rate physicians. And they're not out of line to steer patients to doctors who seem to have the right quality and efficiency profile, he says. What's more, suits physicians have filed to stop this practice are "temper tantrums." Blog

i don't know the details of the rating systems...but when zagat and others will be rating physicians on communication, office appearance/decore, etc...there needs to be an upside for physicians to invest time and $$ in these sorts of amenities. how about tips for excellent service?...more and more people feel entitled to healthcare benefits - wanting technology, time, compassion, attractive surroundings...but when it comes time to pay, plead poverty.

Dr. MD/MBA, I understand your comments, but aren't you linking up disparate topics? Sure, some people won't pay for services rendered, but you're not investing in them when you make your practice attractive.
