Last winter, the world found out that a California mother gave birth to living octuplets after undergoing fertility treatment. At the time, some observers raised questions about the ethics of assisting in a multiple birth of this magnitude, given the potential danger to both the mother and her babies. Now, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine has tightened practice guidelines for fertility treatment, and furthermore, is prepared to work with officials and legislators to make its requirements stick.
