SPOTLIGHT: Facilities, not docs, often take the blame for misuse of drugs for nursing home patients
It's reasonable to think that doctors should be responsible for the psychotropic drugs they prescribe to nursing home patients. A lot of times, however, they have not been held accountable in instances where there wasn't "adequate justification" for the drugs, or the amount prescribed was too high, according to an investigation conducted by the Chicago Tribune. Of 40,000 inspection reports filed since 2001, on 742 Illinois nursing homes, facilities--not physicians--often were blamed in cases where pyschotropics were misused (even in cases where the doctor clearly was in the wrong).
