Officials yesterday arrested the "serial infector" that allegedly caused the hepatitis C outbreak at New Hampshire's Exeter Hospital, the Concord Monitor reported. Authorities picked up David Kwiatkowski at an undisclosed Massachusetts hospital and charged him with obtaining controlled substances by fraud and tampering with a consumer product, according to U.S. Attorney John Kacavas. Kwiatkowski, a traveling lab technician, allegedly abused Fentanyl by injection, tainting syringes with traces of his infected blood that were then used on other patients. So far, 90 former patients have joined in the class-action lawsuit against Exeter Hospital. Authorities said more than a thousand people need to be tested and the case has far-reaching implications across six states.
"The evidence is that he was probably working alone, but we're not excluding anyone at this time," Kacavas said.
Kevin Callahan, president and CEO of Exeter Hospital, said in prepared statement, "It is deeply disturbing that the alleged callous acts of one individual can have such an impact on so many innocent lives." Article
