Senator urges creation of nursing home watch list
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley (R) is backing the creation of a national "watch list" of nursing homes that don't meet federal health and safety standards. Grassley believes the list should be accessible online, note which nursing homes have repeat violations and state what actions have been taken against them. Despite CMS sanctions, many poorly performing nursing homes have continued to fare poorly, according to an April report from the Government Accountability Office. The report, which looked at 63 homes in four states, found that 31 failed to stay in compliance over a five-year period.
