Readmission penalty bill aims to protect hospitals with low-income patients

Rep. Jim Renacci (R-Ohio), along with a bipartisan group of legislators, introduced a bill this week to adjust the formula the Department of Health and Human Services uses to penalize hospitals with high readmission rates. Renacci said the formula is particularly unfair to hospitals that serve low-income patients who might lack the resources to prevent relapses. These patients include dual-eligible patients and low-income seniors. Renacci, who ran several nursing homes prior to his election to Congress, said the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program doesn't account for the ties between socioeconomic status and hospital readmissions.
