Radiology industry safe from offshoring

Predictions that offshoring will put American radiologists out of business are more "urban myth" than reality, argues columnist Leonhardt in The New York Times. Recently, alarmists have been arguing that technology is making it possible for providers to cut back on expenses by turning to cheaper talent in places like India. That, they say, could lead to safety issues, if unsupervised doctors fail to live up to U.S. standards. But the image of the Indian radiologist toiling away in a sweatshop-like environment turns out to be a figment of the imagination. Still, there is reason to think that allowing Indian doctors to play a limited role could work, if we allow ourselves to get over our biases, Leonhardt argues.
