Like peers, raises shrink for Mass. hospital execs
While most Massachusetts hospital execs got raises last year, most were smaller raises than the previous year, mirroring a national trend in compensation for hospital executives.
What makes Massachusetts execs' salaries a bit different is that hospitals and other non-profits are required to file financial reports which include the salaries of top executives. That's put hospital executives' compensation on the radar for many interest groups in the state, including the state's nursing union, which argues CEO salaries shouldn't be rising while nurse-to-patient ratios go down.
Of the state's hospital executives, Baystate Health System CEO Mark Tolosky got the largest raise, up 14 percent in 2006. That brought his total annual compensation to $1.41 million. A close second was Dr. David Barrett, president and CEO of Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Clinic. He got an 11.8 percent raise, bringing his total annual compensation to $1.39 million.
